Our History
Atherton is a world leader in sterilization equipment and infection control products for the hospital, medical and scientific industries.
With the experience of more than 130 years of innovation and technological design, our complete range of products for the healthcare industry are built to the highest quality standards and made for ease of use.
Founded in 1889 in Melbourne by Fred Atherton, A.E. Atherton & Sons Pty Ltd (Atherton) was initially established as a plumbing firm. In the early 1900s, the company expanded to include mechanical services like heating and ventilation, hot water systems and boiling water sterilizers.
With innovation always at our heart, by the mid-fifties, Atherton had entered the domain of stainless steel fabrication. Combining this with our knowledge of traditional plumbing along with our mechanical services capabilities, we were able to bring modern air-conditioning systems, commercial food service fit outs, laboratory and mortuary benching, autopsy tables, down draught benches and scrub sinks into our range of specialist products.
It was our dedication to continuous improvement that saw Atherton design and manufacture an extensive range of hospital and institutional pressure steam sterilizers as well as a wide range of allied health care industry products like drying, warming and storage cabinets and steam generators.
Today, we continue to be a global leader in bringing the latest infection control products to the hospital, medical and scientific industries. Our market coverage has extended from Melbourne to include the rest of Australia and Asia with established agents in New Zealand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei and the Phillipines.
We’re Australia’s only manufacturer of medium to large infection control equipment and have maintained our standard of excellence by achieving ISO-9001 and ISO-13485 accreditations for quality. And we’re still proudly owned and operated by the fifth generation of the Atherton family.
